Article : A CALL FOR MALAYSIAN LOGISTICIANS TO LEAD THE GLOBAL HALAL LOGISTICS & SUPPLY CHAIN. ARE WE TRULY READY?

The logistics world is waking up to the enormous potential of the halal industry. Benefiting from a readymade global customer group of nearly two billion Muslims, the international halal food industry was valued at US$570 billion during 2005. And with the total spend on logistics operations accounting for around 5-10% of total revenue, it is not surprising that logistics companies all over the world are keen to grab a piece of this growing market. However, it is fast discovering, the complexities of the Halal Supply Chain extends much further than the usual concerns regarding unbroken cool chains and the efficient delivery of fresh food produce. To be at the top of the halal logistics, companies need to be well versed in the whole ethos in order to maintain what is known as the 'halal integrity' of a food product. Above all, the industry is now demanding more Specialised Halal Compliant solutions for its supply chain process.

Malaysia is seen as a country with large potential to be the global hub for the halal industry. The halal manufacturing practice and certification process established in Malaysia has earned great amount of respect from the target market worldwide. Concurrently, Malaysia seems to be well prepared with world class infrastructure in place to serve the needs of halal industry and its consumers. The Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) which is built on a 1000 acre  land is now all ready with state-of-the-art port facilities along with a free trade or commercial or industrial zone for interests of local as well as foreign investors. Since the industry is still developing and with Malaysia being considered as the global procurement centre for halal products, it is advisable that logisticians in Malaysia begin concentrating on this component of the industry.

A video on PKFZ as the potential Malaysian as well as South East Asian largest halal hub is available for your viewing.
